Research Services


Location and Hours

The Thomas J. Dodd Research Center is located on the Storrs campus of the University of Connecticut (see map) and is open to the public. The University's archival, manuscript and special collections are accessed in the John P. McDonald Reading Room. Patrons are required to complete the Application for Use of Materials (19KB PDF) and show valid picture identification. Groups are requested to make prior arrangements with the Reader Services coordinator.

Materials in the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center do not circulate and must be viewed in the McDonald Reading Room. The Reading Room Policy governs conduct in the reading room and is designed to secure and protect materials for future use. Access to materials is subject to any restrictions placed on materials by donors or by the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center staff for preservation purposes. Researchers may be required to use reference copies in place of originals. Curatorial staff are able to advise you regarding the availability of particular collections or materials.

The McDonald Reading Room is open during the academic session Monday 10-7, Tuesday-Friday 10-4 and Saturday 12-4. Summer and winter break hours are Monday-Friday 10-4. The McDonald Reading Room is closed on University holidays and occasionally for special events. Please check the calendar for a current listing of closings.

The Samuel and Ann Charters Multimedia Room, located inside the McDonald Reading Room serves researchers using multimedia materials. The multimedia room is equipped with a listening station for patrons using sound recording materials. Wireless access to the Internet is available in the McDonald Reading Room and the Charters Multimedia Room.

Classrooms

The Thomas J. Dodd Research Center has rooms available for class instruction on the use of resources held by Archives & Special Collections. Contact the Curatorial staff to arrange a session.


Internet Access

Access to the Internet is available in the Reading Room. The University of Connecticut is implementing new procedures and researchers without University of Connecticut accounts are required to register for guest status in order to access the Internet via the UConn network. Information and procedures for registration are available on the UITS Guest Registration website. A registration kiosk is available in the Reading Room for onsite registration. A photo id is required for verification.
