Table of Contents
Library Databases
The following is a list of library databases most relevant for studying
the dramatic arts. Because the dramatic arts are so interdisciplinary,
some of the best resources are general databases. A complete list of databases
is available on the Resources
by Title page. Note: Most subscription electronic databases
are only available to the UConn community. Here is more information
about off-campus
(remote) access.
Dramatic Arts Databases
- Arden
Shakespeare (Available only at UConn Libraries computers.)
Contains editorial introductions, glossaries, and grammatical reference
to Shakespearian works.
- Shakespeare
Dictionary (Available only at UConn Libraries computers.)
Database of information about Shakespeare's works, including information
on virtually every character from the plays, plot summaries, familiar
Shakespeare quotations, a brief biography of Shakespeare, and a collection
of images based on nineteenth-century steel engravings.

Shakespeare Bibliography Online
More than 68,583 annotated entries for all important books, articles,
book reviews, dissertations, theatrical productions, reviews of productions,
audiovisual materials, electronic media, and other scholarly and popular
materials related to Shakespeare and published or produced between 1974
and mid-2000. International, scope; more than eighty languages and representing
every country in North America, South America, and Europe, and nearly
every country in Asia, Africa, and Australasia.
Art & Design Databases
- Art Abstracts
and Art Index Retrospective (formerly "Wilson")
Indexes 450 international art and art history publications from 1929
to the present, including English-language periodicals, yearbooks,
and museum bulletins, as well as periodicals published in French,
Italian, German, Japanese, Dutch, and Swedish. In addition, Art Abstracts
references paintings that appear as illustrations in articles and
includes bibliographic citations.
Search
Tips:
Selecting the “Artist” field for searching will
find citations of reproductions of works by that artist.
For articles about the artist and
his/her work, search for the artist’s name in the "Subject" field.
To find articles that contain illustrations, select "Illustration" under
the Physical Description menu.
- ARTstor
Contains approximately 300,000 images covering art, architecture and
archeology and descriptive information, as well as software tools to
enable active use of the collections. Here are handouts
and other support materials (PDF).
- Associated
Press Multimedia Archive Current photos and a selection of pictures
from AP's 50 million image print and negative library. Covers virtually
all major news events photographed from the 1840s to within minutes
of an event occurring today. (Note to designers: read the Help to find
some powerful search features, such concept or color searching. For
example you could search pensive:concept or purple:hue.)
- Bibliography
of the History of Art (BHA) Coverage: 1991-present. Link not
working as of 7/1/03.
Abstracts and indexes publications on the history of art. Covers the
literature of Western Civilization art from the 4th Century A.D. to
the present and American art from the European discoveries to the present.
Updated quarterly.

Grove Art Online
45,000 articles on every aspect of the visual arts – painting, sculpture,
graphic arts, architecture, decorative arts and photography – from prehistory
to the present day. Compiled over 15 years, it represents the work of
more than 6,800 scholars from around the world writing on their own
fields of study.

& Geneology Master Index (Gale)
Comprehensive index to more than 11 million biographical sketches in
over 3000 current and retrospective reference books. Contemporary and
historical figures.

- Dissertation
Abstracts (ProQuest)
Includes citations to dissertations from accredited U.S. institutions
since 1861. Selectively covers masters theses, Canadian dissertations,
and European dissertations. Updated monthly. Has abstracts for dissertations
beginning July 1980 and masters theses beginning spring 1988. For abstracts
before 1980, note the abstract number and year, then go to the print
version of Dissertation Abstracts (Z5055.U5 A53 Babbidge Stacks).

Oxford
Reference Online Full-text language, grammar, and subject dictionaries
and reference works. Performing arts titles include The Oxford
Dictionary of Dance, The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Music, The Concise
Oxford Dictionary of Opera, Who's Who in Opera, and The Concise
Oxford Companion to the Theatre. Other topics include quotation
books, history, religion, law, mythology, folklore, literature companions,
the sciences, and more. See complete

- WorldCat
(via FirstSearch)
Over 30 million bibliographic records for material cataloged by libraries
worldwide. Includes books, scores, sound recordings, etc. Updated daily.
General Article Databases
The following resources index several arts and humanities periodicals,
and are also useful for identifying articles about art and humanities
in non-arts periodicals. These databases include selected full-text
articles.
- Arts & Humanities Citations (for Advanced users)
The University Libraries offers two versions of the Arts &
Humanities Citation Index. Both cover the journal literature of the
arts and humanities. Note: Search options and the contents of each database
vary significantly. Consult a reference librarian if you need more assistance
with either resource.
- Art
& Humanities Citation Index (via Web of Science) Coverage:
1994-present.
Indexes 1,144 of the world's leading arts and humanities journals,
as well as covering individually selected, relevant items from
over 6,800 major science and social science journals. Averages
2,250 new articles per week. Includes approximately 15,250 new
cited references per week. Contains unique citations that reference
actual representations of art work or music scores.
- Arts
& Humanities Citation Search (via FirstSearch) Coverage:
1980-present.
Contains over 1.4 million records drawn from 1,300+ of the most
frequently-cited arts and humanities journals. Updated weekly.
Identifies articles cited by an author, or articles that cite
a given author. Allows title and subject searching.

InfoTrac
(now called Academic
OneFile). 1980-current; includes fulltext. Indexes
and abstracts over 6000 magazines and journals in all fields
of the sciences, social sciences, communication sciences, humanities,
and general interest; reproduces the full text for over 3000
titles; includes newswires; full indexing of The
New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Los Angeles
Times and Christian Science Monitor.
- JSTOR
Provides full-text digitized backfiles of core scholarly journals in
the academic fields, including 38
music titles. Coverage starts with the first volume;
backfiles do not include the most recent three to five years
of published volumes (this protects the publisher's subscriptions
and revenue opportunities; search for other journal titles in e-Journal
Locator
to find most recent coverage). JSTOR also includes articles
on dramatic or performing arts appearing in non-dramatic arts
journals, which are especially useful for socio-econo-historical
context.

Full text articles to humanities and social sciences journals, including
Asian Theatre Journal, Camera Obscura, Cinema Journal, Discourse,
PAJ, TDR/The Drama Review, Theater, Theatre Journal, Theatre Topics,
and Wide Angle.
- WilsonWeb
Includes Art Abstracts, Art Index Retrospective 1929-1984, and Readers'
Guide Retrospective 1890-1982. Potentially useful for finding old reviews
and production information. Note: UConn no longer subscribes to the
Humanities Index; it may be replaced by Humanities Internationale Complete
(Ebsco).
Literature Databases
- Gale
Literary Databases
Provides access to information in three premier literary resources including
Contemporary Authors, Contemporary Literary Criticism Select,
and the Dictionary of Literary Biography. Useful for researching
the lives and writings of 100,000 authors in addition to critical reactions
to their work.
- MasterPlots
(Available only at UConn Libraries computers.)
Contains author biographies and mini-critiques that sketch the theme,
style, plot, and characters in over 1000 works of literature, including
dramatic works.
- MLA
Bibliography (via EbscoHost) Coverage: 1963-present.
Produced by the Modern Language Association, this database includes
references from over 6,000 journals in the areas of literature, languages,
linguistics, and folklore. Updated ten times per year.
Music Databases
- International
Index to Music Periodicals (IIMP)
Covers scholarly studies, reviews, and popular topics, plus feature
music articles and obituaries appearing in The New York Times and The
Washington Post. Updated monthly. Includes non-English language.
- Current file: 1996-present; 375 periodicals; includes subject
headings and abstracts.
- Retrospective file: pre-1996; 142 periodicals, some from inception;
citations only.
- Music
Index 1979-1999. Comprehensively indexes most (i.e., 640+)
scholarly, applied, music education, and popular music periodicals.
Indexes letters and other critical details. Citations only; broad subject
headings. Includes non-English language. See print version of Music
Index for complete coverage (1949-present). See list of journals

- Music Literature, see RILM below.
- New
Grove Dictionary of Music & Musicians, 2nd edn. Standard and
largest comprehensive music encyclopedia in English. Includes full-text
articles on musical terminology, history, theory, practice, people (e.g.,
composers, performers, printers, librettists, scholars, etc.), styles,
places, etc. Includes works lists, bibliographies, visual examples,
and sound clips. Second edition published December 2000.
- RILM
Abstracts (via EbscoHost) Coverage: 1969-present.
Citations and abstracts of scholarly writings on music and related disciplines.
Updated monthly. Includes periodical articles, essays, festschriften,
dissertations, books, scholarly reviews, etc. Broad, international coverage,
including non-English language. Corresponds to printed RILM Abstracts.
News Databases (for Reviews and Current Events)
- Factiva
(replaces Dow Jones Interactive)
Global news and business information service combines the content sets
of Dow Jones Interactive and Reuters Business. May contain arts reviews
or business periodicals pertaining to the arts.
- iConn
Newsstand
Provides full-text access to the following newspapers: Christian Science
Monitor (1988 - ); Hartford Courant (1992 - ); Los Angeles Times (1988
- ); New York Times (1999 - ); Wall Street Journal (1984 - ); Washington
Post (1987 - ).
- InfoTrac
In additional to periodical citations and selected full text, InfoTrac
has full indexing of The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington
Post, Los Angeles Times and Christian Science Monitor. It also includes
89 wire services covering agriculture, general news, broadcast news,
government, business press releases, industry topics, sports and current
events from all over the world.

York Times Historical
A full-image archive of the entire historical run of The New York
Times; complete coverage from 1851-2000. Quick, accurate Web access
to history as reported by the nation's leading newspaper. Includes
display and classified ads, comics and cartoons, photos, maps, graphics,
etc., editorials and commentary, literary [and arts] criticism, and
in-depth coverage of science and politics.

Guide: Newspapers
List of newspapers at the Babbidge Library. Includes links to newspapers

Database Locator (dCompass) The University of Connecticut subscribes
to over 240 Web-Based, commercially-produced research and citation databases.
Most of these resources are limited to the University of Connecticut

Resources Provides links to resources that are completely or
partially full text. Content includes journals, current news, statistical

Journal Locator The University of Connecticut Libraries purchases
access to over 10,000 journals, online and in full text, through various
databases and commercial online journal providers. The eJournal
Locator can be used to determine if a title is available through

the database or online journal directly.
